NEMRUT from Istanbul or Cappadocia

This amazing whirlwind tour takes in the highlights of South Eastern Turkey. Beginning in Cappadocia or from Istanbul, travelling through the picturesque scenery of Central and Southern Anatolia to the summit of Nemrut and it’s amazing collection of statues to the religiously important highlights of Sanliurfa. This land is full of ancient surprises, ancient culture and history. This tour can be arranged to start in either Istanbul or Cappadocia.

Day 1, ISTANBUL – KAYSERI – Early morning transfer from your hotel in Istanbul to the airport. Short flight puts us in Central Anatolia in the ancient city of Kayseri. This tour amy also originate in Goreme in Cappadocia. We visit the 13th Century Seljuki Caravanserai at Karatayhan. We pass through Pinarbasi on our way to Tekir for lunch. Plenty of photo opportunities of the beautiful Tekir Valley. We’ll have time for a stop in the Turkish home of ice cream Karamanmaras for a quick ‘dondurma’. Check into our hotel in the Nemrut area. Day 2,  NEMRUT  SUNRISE – There is no better way to see this site than at sunrise. The sun and the stars played an enormous part in the mixed religion of the Commagene Empire. We’ll travel in darkness then walk the last 25 minutes to the summit where we will meet the pantheon of Gods and their colossal statues at sunrise. Slowly the murky pre dawn darkness will retreat and beckon the new day as the sun rises and fills the surrounding valleys with a clear and warming sunlight. After we’ve experienced our sunrise and warmed up with a cup of tea we head down to Arsemia the home of the ancient Commagenes, Eski Kahta, the Septimus Severus Bridge over the Cendere Stream and lastly the Karakus tumulus the burial place of the royal family of the empire.

Finally we leave the Nemrut area and en route to Urfa stop at the incredible engineering marvel of the GAP Ataturk Dam. After checking in to our hotel in Sanli Urfa we take a journey back in time. We visit the Cave of Abraham (his birthplace) and the pools of holy carp. Nimrod threw Abraham into a fire which miraculously turned to water and the logs into fish. We visit the Souq or old bazaar where there is a definite mix of cross border cultures. We drive further south near the Syrian border to Harran, one of the most ancient and continuously inhabited places on earth. Take tea in a local ‘Beehive House’ and explore the Citadel, the Old Mosque and the oldest Islamic University. We return to Urfa for the night and enjoy dinner. (BLD)

Day 3, ADANA – ISTANBUL – Today we drive along the ancient roads of Anatolia crossing the Euphrates River at Birecik. We’ll have time to visit the sanctuary of the  Northern Bald Ibis, almost extinct throughout the world. We make our way to Adana on the Turkish coast and home to the massive NATO airbase at Incirlik. From Adana we take our flight back to Istanbul. We can help arrange any further accommodation or tour services on your return to Istanbul. (BL)

Day 3, CAPPADOCIA – For those not returning to Istanbul the tour will continue to Goreme in Cappadocia and finish upon arrival. Please let us know in advance and we can arrange any further accommodation or services on your return to Goreme. (BL)

Day 1 (Cappadocia – Nemrut Mountain)
We will pick you up from your hotel at 08:00am and depart from Goreme. After passing Kayseri city, we will visit the 13th century Seljuk Caravanserai “Karatayhan”. Our next stop will be in Pinarbasi for a short tea break. Then we will keep driving to Tekir for Lunch. After taking pictures of the gorgeous scenery of the Tekir Valley we will drive to Kahta and check-in to our hotel. Dinner and overnight in Kahta

Day 2 (Nemrut – Harran)
We will depart from hotel very early in the morning up to the ruins. At the end of the road, we will get off the van and walk twenty five minutes until the summit. Here we will watch the beautiful sun rise between the colossal size statues and heads of the kings and Gods. After sun rise, your guide will give information about Commagene Kingdom and the statues while walking around and taking pictures. Then we will drive back to the hotel for breakfast. On the way to hotel we will visit the ruins of the Arsemia Roman bridge of Cendere and Tumulus Tomb of Karakus. We will keep driving to Sanliurfa and Harran. On our way, we will visit the Ataturk Dam which is the biggest dam in Middle east. We will check-in to our hotel in Sanliurfa and have our lunch here. After the lunch we will visit Abraham’s Cave and the Pools of Holy Carp surrounding it. We will than walk around oriental covered bazaar and drive to Harran a village of Spellbinding Mud-Brick “beehive” houses mentioned in the book of genesis where Abraham spent the last years of his life. After visiting the ruins of Harran including city walls, oldest Islamic university and the castle dated to 18th century we will drive back to hotel. Dinner and overnight in Sanliurfa.

Day 3 (Sanliurfa – Istanbul)
After breakfast we will depart from Sanliurfa to Birecik which is known with its bald-ibis (Kelaynak) birds. These birds are living only in Birecik in the world and there is a very limited population of them. We will visit the breeding farm of Bald Ibis birds. After our lunch, we will drive up to the Taurus Mountains. We will have a short tea break here and drive back to Goreme.

This tour has guaranteed departure from Istanbul on every Monday and Thursday. The tour starts at 07:00 on the first day and finish at 18:00 on the third day. The rate is 200 Euro per person including professional guide, entrance fees, lunches, dinners, accommodation and private AC transportation. Group size is usually between 6 and 10 people.
