Daily Göbeklitepe & Şanlıurfa Tour

Your day begins early with a hotel pick-up in Şanlıurfa and a short drive to Göbekli Tepe, the 11,600-year-old hilltop sanctuary that overturned everything archaeologists thought they knew about the dawn of civilisation. Your guide walks you among the four circular enclosures revealed so far, pausing at the T-shaped limestone pillars and the celebrated Pillar 43 — the so-called Vulture Stone — whose dense bestiary of foxes, serpents and soaring birds has fuelled theories ranging from a death cult to the world's oldest star map. Raised wooden walkways keep you above the fragile circles while a sweeping steel canopy shields them.

From the hill you drop back into Şanlıurfa and the Archaeology Museum, where the finest portable finds from the site are displayed: the haunting life-size human statue and a wild boar carved in stone, both unearthed only in the past decade. After a traditional lunch of Urfa kebab in a shady historic courtyard, the afternoon belongs to the old town — the sacred carp pools of Balıklıgöl, where local tradition places the birth of the prophet Abraham; the twin columns of the citadel; and the vaulted bazaars of Gümrük Han, still trading copper, spices and hand-woven textiles much as they have for five centuries. The tour closes with a drop-off at your hotel or, if you prefer, the airport for a same-day return to Istanbul.
