3 Days Göbeklitepe & Mt. Nemrut Tour

Fly east from Istanbul to Adıyaman in the morning and drive up into the Taurus foothills to the foot of Nemrut Dağı — at 2,150 metres, one of the highest peaks north of the Euphrates. A short walk brings you to the summit and the UNESCO-listed East Terrace of Antiochus I, king of the small but ambitious Commagene realm. Eight colossal stone gods — Apollo, Zeus, Heracles and their Greek-Persian counterparts — sit headless on thrones beside eagles and lions, their fallen faces arranged deliberately on the ground after two thousand years of earthquakes. You time your visit for the West Terrace to watch the same statues silhouette against the dying light, a spectacle that has drawn travellers to this summit since the road was first cut in the 19th century. Descend to Kahta for dinner and your overnight stay.

Rise before dawn for the optional second ascent of Nemrut — this time to the East Terrace for sunrise, when the heads light up gold against a pink Anatolian sky. Back at the base, the morning traces the rest of the Commagene trail: the Karakuş Tümülüs, a burial mound guarded by eagle and lion columns raised by a grieving queen for her family; the Septimius Severus bridge at Cendere, a single Roman arch still carrying traffic after eighteen centuries; and the rock reliefs of Arsameia, the ancient summer capital, where an inscription shows King Mithradates shaking hands with Heracles. In the afternoon the road winds west to Şanlıurfa — ancient Edessa — where you check into your boutique hotel near the old town.

The final morning is the reason most travellers make the journey: Göbekli Tepe, a fifteen-minute drive from your hotel. Your guide leads you through the Neolithic enclosures and unpacks the story of Klaus Schmidt, the German archaeologist who recognised in 1994 that the "Potbelly Hill" was no ordinary mound but the world's oldest known temple — built by hunter-gatherers six thousand years before Stonehenge. Continue into Şanlıurfa to the Archaeology Museum, home to the haunting human statues and the life-size stone boar recovered from the site, then walk down to Balıklıgöl — the sacred carp pools linked to the prophet Abraham — and the covered bazaar. A late-afternoon transfer takes you to the airport for your flight back to Istanbul.
