7 Days Southeastern Turkey Grand Tour

An early flight carries you from Istanbul to Adıyaman, gateway to one of Turkey's least-visited but most spectacular corners — the ancient kingdom of Commagene. After lunch the road climbs into the Taurus range to the foot of Nemrut Dağı (2,150 m), where a short walk brings you to the East Terrace of King Antiochus I. Eight colossal gods — a Greek-Persian blend of Apollo, Zeus and Heracles — sit headless on thrones, flanked by eagles and lions, their fallen faces arranged on the ground like a careful offering. You watch the sun drop behind the western terrace, the statues reduced to black silhouettes against the dusk. Return to Kahta for dinner and your first night.

Optional pre-dawn ascent for sunrise at the East Terrace, when the heads glow honey-gold against the waking sky. Below, the Commagene trail unfolds: the Karakuş Tümülüs, raised by King Mithradates II for his mother; the soaring single arch of the Roman Cendere Bridge, still in use after 1,800 years; and the rock-cut reliefs of Arsameia, where a king clasps hands with a god. The afternoon drive runs west across the plain to Şanlıurfa — biblical Ur of the Chaldees — and your boutique hotel in the old town.

The day belongs to Göbekli Tepe, the 11,600-year-old hilltop sanctuary that has rewritten the story of human civilisation. Your guide walks you among the four excavated circular enclosures with their towering T-shaped pillars — the oldest megaliths on Earth — and decodes the dense imagery of the famous Vulture Stone. Back in Şanlıurfa, the Archaeology Museum holds the finest finds from the site, including the haunting Neolithic human statues unearthed only recently. The afternoon closes at Balıklıgöl, the sacred carp pools where Abraham is said to have been born, and the labyrinthine covered bazaar.

Drive south to Harran, a crossroads since Babylonian times, famous for its conical mud-brick "beehive" houses — a design that has kept families cool for three thousand years and survives nowhere else in such numbers. Visit the medieval castle and the ruins of what was once the world's first Islamic university, then continue to the half-submerged village of Halfeti on the Euphrates. A boat cruise carries you past flooded gardens and a rising cliff-face Roman fortress — the slow blue Euphrates, one of the rivers of Paradise in three faiths. Overnight near Birecik or Gaziantep.

Gaziantep — a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy — opens with the Zeugma Mosaics Museum, the largest of its kind in the world, where the haunting gaze of the "Gypsy Girl" mosaic stares out from a darkened gallery. The afternoon belongs to the old city: copper-beaters still at work in the Bakırcılar Bazaar, pistachio coffee in a 400-year-old han, and (at the right hour) a tasting of baklava rolled so thin you could read newsprint through it. No other Turkish city takes its food quite this seriously.

A slower day to consolidate the week. The morning is free for a last exploration of Gaziantep's museums — the culinary museum, the toy museum, or the hilltop castle with its long views across the plain — or simply for a second slice of baklava in a quiet courtyard café. After lunch, drive back to Adıyaman for a relaxed afternoon and an optional scenic light-aircraft flight over the Nemrut statues at golden hour (weather permitting). Final dinner and overnight in Adıyaman.

After a leisurely breakfast, transfer to Adıyaman airport for the morning flight back to Istanbul, where your southeastern Turkey adventure ends. For travellers keen to keep going, easy extensions run to Mount Ararat and Ani, Diyarbakır and its basalt walls, or across into the Mesopotamian plains further east.
